The Power of Beliefs
Are you not getting the results you want with your health? Are you eating well, moving effectively, resting properly but still not seeing the results you desire? The problem may be in your beliefs about your ability to achieve the health change you desire.
Believe it or not, the power of your mind and, more specifically, your beliefs plays a crucial role in optimising health. In fact, your way of being is a direct reflection of your perception of yourself. Regardless of how much you want to improve your health, if you have a subconscious belief that optimal health is unattainable to you, your health goals will never be realised. Put simply, the responsibility to achieve success with your health lies completely within your own brain.
There is mounting evidence that proves our beliefs control our way of being. Our perceptions cause our brain to be wired in a specific way based on past experiences. Once wired, similar situations to the ones we have already experienced will happen over and over again. Using willpower will never override the brain’s programming because the subconscious brain is a lot more powerful than the conscious brain. Your conscious brain may well want to improve your health, but if your underlying perception of health optimisation is negative, that will override the conscious mind every time.
How can you fix this? Instead of trying to alter your behaviour, look to the underlying perception. Once you find a way to alter your perception and see health through a new set of eyes, your brain will rewire and produce a new way of being that is natural and effortless.
Do any of these beliefs sound familiar?:
“It’s just not possible for me to achieve an optimal state of health”
“It’s hard work to improve my health”
“As I get older, declining health is inevitable”
“I have no control over my health”
“I’m too busy”
These negative beliefs about your ability to achieve your goals WILL prevent you from achieving success and it is therefore essential that you determine what your negative beliefs are and then go about changing them. Here’s how you do it:
STEP 1: DISCOVER YOUR BELIEFS
Without thinking too much, write down answers to the following questions. Simply take a pen and paper and write the first thing that pops into your mind. Write until you have nothing else to write.
What I believe about health improvement is…..What I believe about maintaining optimal health is…..What I believe about the changes needed for achieving optimal health is.....
STEP 2: ACKNOWLEDGE THE LIMITING BELIEFS
Go over what you have written and look for the limiting beliefs. Once you are aware of your beliefs, you have the power to change them to beliefs that will empower you to achieve your goals.
STEP 3: CREATE A NEW EMPOWERING BELIEF
Create positive beliefs that support your health goals by writing down the opposite of your limiting beliefs. Start to affirm these new beliefs to yourself every time you are eating, moving your body or simply working throughout the day. Eventually, it will become your natural way of thinking.
STEP 4: VISUALISE THE OUTCOME OF YOUR NEW BELIEFS
Answer these questions:
What does (your new belief) look like?
What does (your new belief) feel like?
What will others be saying to me when I achieve (your new belief)?
Visualise this every day before you go to bed and when you wake up in the morning because this will help to deepen the belief. Throw away ALL self-doubt and start believing that what you want is possible!
Being aware of your subconscious beliefs is the first step in being able to change them. Once you are aware of your beliefs, the power is in your hands as to whether you continue to believe in that way of thinking or not. Empower yourself with new ways of thinking and allow yourself to achieve the goals you so badly desire!
